I put up a copy of minotar.net's source. If anyone's interested, you can use it as your avatar on these forums (remember that the max size is 100x100px).

My head appears slightly different because my script also renders the front-head-overlay part of the skin

Nah, it just doesn't look right without the "front-head-overlay" part. I would use it if it had that though.

Use /helm/
