CTF_2Fort and its weaknesses

I realize that the a lot of the Aprilon community are payload fans, but there's no denying CTF_2Fort. I think that anyone that has ever played a Team Fortress game has or has had some sort of profound respect for 2Fort. I remember going through the 2Fort phase that I'm sure many have gone through, where I played NOTHING but 2Fort.

Fulsy and I had a discussion on steam about maps lastnight, and somehow 2Fort was bought up. We were talking about 2Fort, and what needed to be fixed. 2Fort is somehow addicting, but when you really think about it, there are serious problems with the map layout.

I figured the best thing to do was to spam the TF2 board with this topic. ;)

Dunno if you guys have seen this or not, but here's an article about pretty much exactly what I'm talking about.

That explains pretty much everything I was gonna bring up. From lack of flank routes to lack of health packs, this map is far too defensively stacked IMHO. I took the liberty of roughly sketching 2fort and relabling it with the problems as I see them (Paint.NET FTW).

Green = intel complex
Grey = sewer/tunnels
Orange = Top floor/battlements/catwalks
Purple = Ground floor


Basically, my list of faults:

  1. Only one way up to the battlements
  2. There is a huge lack of health packs.
  3. Lack of flank routes
  4. Both routes to the intel start and end at the same point.
    (Take a look at Well or Turbine, their routes are seperated and come out on seperate sides of the intel)
  5. It's hard to ascend (Can't get out of the water pool w/o going in the sewers, also ties into #4)

You can basically sum 2Fort up in one word...

Bottleneck.

ctf_2fort is not a bad map, but the way it is played makes it a bad map.

Nah, the map is just bad. You can't play it any other way.

I think 2fort is a pretty cool guy. eh captures the intelligence and doesn't afraid of anything. I prefer it to payload any day of the week.

I find this debatable, because the Scout can double-jump and run across the roof of the bridge while the Soldier and Demo can rocket/grenade jump from the ground. You're entirely screwed if you're any other class.

You are right about the bottleneck thing. The biggest fault with 2fort is that a single sentry placed in the doorway between the barn and the courtyard completely castrates the opposition's attempt for the flag. The same is true if the opposing team rushes snipers, as a brace of snipers on the battlements combined with one in each doorway renders even a substantial push difficult.

2fort's still an old favourite. I really ought to play on Aprilon when the server's not empty.

Yeah 2Fort sucks pretty much in Team Fortress 2. Especially in public servers because the offense/defense ratio is always fucked up. 2Fort used to be pretty awesome in Team Fortress Classic. I think the only reason why this map was nice, is because you could capture the flag in no-time if you knew how to time and jump on your special grenades as a scout or medic. But without the speed of the special grenades it's a lot harder to capture the flag. Especially when both teams have like 90% of the players defending.
