[GMOD] Got an idea!

08 Jan 2012, 20:12

Ohai guys, so i heard you will not run the gmod server, and not trying because it might be a money loss, but i can offer hosting it for you for free. I ran one a while ago, and people all over the world have been joining. Though, they sad it had no lag at all. So what do you think? Remember: it's free! I can do it 24/7 too ;)

so basically after we said no in
viewtopic.php?f=8&t=2153

the first thing you do is make a new topic
with an idea you probably didn't even think through

'sides you're from romania, internet in romania is fast but dies like every 10 minutes.

Maybe, but since now, i haven't expirienced such. I'm currently on fiber power and it has never died yet. Or even if it does, it cmes back online in less than 30 seconds (only one time happened when it was storm outside though)

Yes, that is true, i DO have a dynamic ip, (as far as i know) but im using a redirect address, so it doesnt matter if my ip changes or not, that one will not change, and will be the same. (kiralystic.no-ip.org) i use it when i need making a game server or such

Steam doesn't save the dynamic DNS entry when adding a server to favorites, it will resolve it once and then always use the IP address the DNS was pointing to at that moment. :(
There is a feature request for the steam client but its very low priority.

Also, running servers, that are supposed to be highly available, on non-server hardware will end in tears. :v

You probably didn't try to run anything on it. :v * http://instantrimshot.com/ *
But seriously, gmod has a linux build; why waste performance on a windows shell. ;)

The two TF2 servers during Dec 2009 - Feb 2010 was running on a Windows root :)

That's not what LifeTimeBLOOD was refering to.

When you add a server using a DNS/A record, this happens:
- You add "server.mydomain.com"
- Steam Client adds "server.mydomain.com" which resolves to an IP like 89.19.29.99

It doesn't save "server.mydomain.com" to your favourites, it adds IP 89.19.29.99.
If you update "server.mydomain.com", the changes won't reflect on the Steam client.
